Full description »Baltimore Album quilts were made for, or by, someone living in Baltimore during the years from 1846 to 1852. Those made in the surrounding counties in Maryland are not true Baltimore Album quilts, but are Baltimore Album style quilts.
This is a true Baltimore Album quilt. A number of the blocks have been signed. A poem has been inscribed on one in indelible ink with the signature ‘Alice A. Ryder, April 1st, 1847, Baltimore, Md.’
The recurrence of the same blocks in different quilts has led some quilt historians to suggest that they may have been available in kit form or professionally designed.
'The Alice A. Ryder Quilt is one of the most fabulous Baltimore Album Quilts I have had the opportunity to research and document. The needle-women who appliquéd the blocks were exceptionally skilled. The appliqué was done with white thread that can hardly be seen. The layout of the blocks is well balanced and the quilting is outstanding.' Marylou McDonald, quilter and quilt historian
