Leverhulme Talk: Adoption and Indigenous Citizenship Laws in Canada

8 October | 2–3pm

This free talk is a special opportunity to understand how Indigenous people in Canada have used adoption to not only renew their families, but to renew their nations as well. Leading Anishinaabe scholar, Damien Lee, is an associate professor at Toronto Metropolitan University with a PhD in Indigenous Studies. He was adopted into Fort William First Nation as a baby and is a band member there.

About the talk

For nearly 175 years, the Canadian government has attempted to regulate who can belong with First Nations communities. This talk focuses specifically on Anishinaabe (or Ojibwe) families of the northern Great Lakes, who continue to use their own laws to determine who belongs, sometimes in ways that can challenge or uphold state control. The American Museum & Gardens is grateful to the Leverhulme Trust for facilitating Damien Lee’s talk as part of his Leverhulme Visiting Professorship activities.
