Could you be a part of our team?
Our family of volunteers lie at the very heart of the American Museum and play a major role in our success. Indeed, we are proud to be considered one of the most welcoming heritage venues in Bath, a strength due almost entirely to our team of over 150 dedicated and committed volunteers, supported by the front of house team.
Hailing from all walks of life, and of all ages, these dedicated and committed men and women inspire our visitors with their enthusiasm, knowledge, and passion for American history and the decorative arts.
Interested in joining us? If so, we are sure you will find volunteering at the Museum to be hugely rewarding. It will offer you the chance to meet new colleagues, make new friends, exchange ideas, and to share and develop your knowledge and skills.
The majority of our volunteering opportunities are for Room Guides, so you must be a confident, outgoing individual, keen to interact with visitors – young and old, and with good communication skills.
You will already have a good knowledge of American history, but a commitment to learning more is all important, and, to this end, we are constantly investing in our Guides through a programme of extensive and ongoing training, knowledge sharing and research opportunities.
We are also keen to recognise the loyalty and support of our volunteers, and so you will be eligible for:
- Reimbursement of travel expenses
- Discount in the Café and shops
- Coffee mornings and knowledge sharing talks
- Annual outing and Christmas party
- Copies of Museum publications
- Use of the library by appointment
- Free entry to the Museum as long as you are a volunteer
- Complimentary tickets for family and friends
A limited number of other volunteering opportunities exist at the American Museum including working in the gardens, in the Herb Shop or library. Please call for details of current vacancies.
Would you like to meet new friends, discover new experiences, learn more or share your love of all things American? Then join us here at the only Museum of Americana outside the U.S.
We are always looking for volunteers to help guide in our Period Rooms, help interpret our gardens, tend our gardens, and help in our library. If you are interested please contact [email protected].
Garden Guide Volunteers
Enjoy spending time in the great outdoors? Love horticulture and nature? If so, joining our team of Garden Guides could be just what you are looking for. You will spend time talking to visitors as they wander around our wonderful New American Garden and restored Mount Vernon Garden, and you will also lead guided tours, introducing visitors to the estate, the planting schemes, and the beauty of our grounds.
If you think this could be for you, please take a look at our Garden Guide Role Profile and use our Volunteer Application Form apply.
As a Volunteer Exhibition Guide you will play a crucial part in enhancing the visitor experience of this years two special exhibitions, Kaffe Fassett’s Quilts in America and, All Shook Up: Thomas Kellner’s America, through personal interaction and by interpreting the exhibits while maintaining both visitor and display safety, and security.
The American Museum & Gardens has learning at the heart of everything we do.
We are currently recruiting Learning Volunteers to assist with the delivery of the Museum’s learning programme. You’ll help our Learning Officer deliver outstanding curriculum based on site and off site sessions to all Key Stages.
