Coloured copperplate of the world shown in two hemispheres.

Full description »

Coloured copperplate of the world shown in two hemispheres. Engraved for the Polyglot Bible, printed at the Plantin Press in 1572, and shows the geographic placement of Noah's sons and their offspring. The legends appear in Hebrew and Latin. The delineation of America resembles that of Gastaldi and this is the first world map to show part of Australia. The map is decorated with wind-gods, ships and sea monsters. The eyes of the wind head above North America are crossed through exertion.
