Full description »

435 plates – depicting 1,065 specimens – were included in the complete folio of Audubon’s Birds of America. Sold by subscription, the first folios were produced on ‘double-elephant’ paper (29½ inches by 39½ inches). These volumes are often cited as the greatest illustrated books ever printed.

'The engraved copper plates were produced directly from Audubon’s life-size drawings. Each print was coloured by hand; Audubon’s instructions about colouring were precise and detailed, and he would not tolerate any irregularities.' Stuart Ross, Head of Visual Resources (retired), AMIB
