Full description »

‘Modern’ maps of Spain, France, Italy and Palestine were included in this edition of Ptolemy, which was translated by Francesco Berlinghieri into Italian verse and produced in Florence in 1480.

Contains a depiction of the British Isles with Scotland lurching at an angle to embrace the ‘German Ocean’. This map is based on Ptolemy’s cylindrical projection and uses Roman names to denote geographical locations and individual tribes. As with most printed Ptolemy maps of the Britain, the ancient Caledonian Forest is shown.

Another remarkable feature of this 1480 edition is the alphabetical rather than geographical order employed for Ptolemy’s index of names, along with their latitude and longitude – a system still used in a modern gazetteer.
