Full description »

Forty-one basket blocks (each 9 inches square) have been set on point within 2-inch wide pink sashing. Each block contains a basket pieced from triangles with an appliqué handle. The blocks have been cleverly arranged so that the centre row sits at the middle of the bed and the remaining strips of baskets are the right way up when viewed from either side of the bed. The green appliqué hearts that adorn the outer triangles could signify this was made as a marriage quilt – it was considered unlucky to use hearts on quilts not destined for a bride’s trousseau. This version of the basket block is also known as Cherry Basket, Colonial Basket, and Flower Basket. Some of the fabrics used in this quilt are the same as the Log Cabin Quilt (1976.16), which came from the same family.
