Claridge Lecture: At Home at Highclere - The Real Downton Abbey

April 13, 2017 7:00pm - 8:30 pm

Our lecturer, the 8th Countess of Carnarvon, lives at Highclere Castle, otherwise known to millions of fans as Downton Abbey.
Lady Carnarvon has published two historical bestsellers focusing on the social life of the house around the First and Second World Wars, exploring what Highclere was really like during this time. Her third book develops the theme of entertainment, with stunning photographs and archival gems. Highclere remained a glamorous house, welcoming guests from statesmen to royalty, and celebrities from the stage and screen.

Join Lady Carnarvon for an inside view of Highclere and a book signing.

Drinks will be available from 6.30pm.

This lecture is presented with the kind support of Wendy Claridge.

Give to our annual appeal today

The Museum needs generous members and supporters to boost donations to its latest annual appeal. We need to raise £20,000 to prepare for, and mark, the Manor House’s 200th anniversary in 2020. We wish to commission British artist Bruce Munro to create and install a spectacular chandelier, or light sculpture, in Central Hall to celebrate this milestone. The new installation will be unique in the United Kingdom and sympathetic to the history of the House, with a “nod” to the vibrant role it plays in modern times.

You can donate to the annual appeal in several ways: online; by telephone (01225 823010); or by post. Simply download, print, and complete the donation form on our website and return it with your cheque to: Development Office, American Museum in Britain, Claverton Manor, Bath BA2 7BD. The Museum accepts debit and credit card donations (American Express, Delta, Maestro, Mastercard, and Visa).

Thank you for your support.
