Heritage Open Day

September 17 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm

This year we will be celebrating Heritage Open Days, offering free entry for all into our spectacular gardens. Located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the hilltop site of the American Museum’s home takes full advantage of the spectacular views over the Limpley Stoke Valley and River Avon near Bath.

The 30 acres of grade II listed gardens surrounding the house represent some of the most iconic movements in American landscape design and include the New American Garden, created by famous American landscape architects Oehme Van Sweden (OvS), Mount Vernon – which is a replica from George Washington’s house outside of Washington, DC – a dell, an arboretum, amphitheatre and children’s garden along with a wilderness trail and parklands for further exploration. The New American Garden embraces the seasonality of the American meadow with beautiful waves of colour, texture and movement. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the swing band that will be playing for the Heritage Open Day.

For a small upcharge, visitors are very welcome to visit the Museum in the grade I listed manor house – a magical portal into American history and culture. With the fascinating heritage exhibition, immersive period rooms, textile collection, folk art gallery, living history characters and much more, every room is alive with American stories. Our seasonal gallery exhibition, Hatching the Past: American Dinosaur Explorers, with its incredible hands-on dinosaur experience, is also a must see.
