Independence Day Fair and BBQ
July 2, 2016 12:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Roll up, roll up for the American Museum’s Independence Day Fair! Expect fun, games, and entertainment for all the family as we celebrate in the style of a traditional American county fair.
Family visitors can try out our traditional fairground games and work off some energy on the bouncy castle. Family friendly craft activities will be taking place in the coach house from 1pm until 4pm— create your own Independence Day-themed wind sock or whizzy peg! Be inspired by our American Toy Story exhibition and have your face painted in the style of your favourite movie hero.
Enjoy slow-barbecued baby back ribs, pulled pork, and hot dogs from Bristol’s Spitfire BBQ. Spitfire source their meats locally where possible and are proud supporters of independent businesses. All their classic American meats are flavoured with their secret recipe Pitfire rub and a smoky barbecue sauce. Veggie options available too!
Will your baking skills rise to the occasion, or do you knead the extra practise? Enter into our Independence Day baking competition for free entry on the day, as well as the chance to win a year’s Maple membership to the Museum! This year’s competition is judged by baking expert Hannah Wiltshire, founder of Baby Cakes bakery.
The Wiltshire Guild of Spinners, Weavers, and Dyers demonstrate the traditional textiles crafts that have seen a resurgence in the states in recent years, including quilting, spinning, and weaving. Pop in and visit the Nonsuch Dulcimer Club, who will be showing off examples of this unusual Appalachian instrument. Drop into our Herb Shop and learn how to make Tussie Mussie bouquets.
Riders Motorcycles and the Great Western Chapter will be displaying Harley Davidsons, and we also have some classic American cars on display too. Performances and displays will take place throughout the day, with 1950s and ’60s cover band Kabin Rock bringing the fair to a close with live music from 5.30-8pm – join JoAnne on the terrace to learn how to learn to bop, stroll, and jive!
Keep your eye out for an Elvis impersonator, who will be popping up throughout the site, and performing in different locations!
Before 5pm: included with gardens only admission (adults £7, concessions £5.50, children £4.50)
After 5pm: adults £2, children £1
