Christmas 2014 – A Winter’s Tale
Saturday 22 November – Sunday 14 December 2014
Tuesday – Sunday, 12noon-4.30pm
Special late night opening on Friday 5 December, until 8pm
This Christmas our Period Rooms will come to life as we recreate scenes from popular fiction set in America. Visitors will be familiar with many of the classic tales that have inspired us, such as Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or Washington Irving’s Legend of Sleepy Hollow. But we have also included modern classics. Our earliest room is dedicated to recreating a scene from Celia Rees’ Witch Child. Written in the year 2000, this book has been translated into over 25 languages, and is required reading in many secondary schools.
Our Christmas season is always a favourite time for families to visit. Every year we have a children’s trail and this year is no different. Bertie the Bookworm loves a good book and he has crawled into our Period Rooms to enjoy the stories first hand. See if you can spot him!
One of the things that has visitors returning year after year to see our Christmas displays is the rich array of handmade decorations throughout the Museum. Inspired by ‘book art’ and a monochrome palette, this year’s designs promise to be as creative as those of previous years. We look forward to welcoming you to the Museum during this year’s Christmas displays.
